Brownsville Scholars Program Funding Opportunities

Mike Hernandez III

As semi-retired CEO of Texas-based D&M Leasing, Micheal Albert “Mike” Hernandez III leads a successful automotive leasing company with locations in Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, and Grand Prairie. Mike Hernandez III prepared for his career by attending Texas A&M University, and supports his alma mater through initiatives such as the Brownsville Scholars Program, which he founded with a donation of more than $1 million in 2016.

The program supports disadvantaged students from Brownsville, Texas, recently named the poorest city in the country. Through Mr. Hernandez’s generous initial contribution, the program will offer scholarships to eligible students through 2020, and Texas A&M has created a number of additional funding opportunities for individuals and institutions who would like to contribute toward future awards.
Potential donors can support a number of initiatives. For example, a $25,000 donation will provide funds in perpetuity for an incoming student to attend Texas A&M’s Fish Camp extended orientation program or gain experience through an internship. A $100,000 gift will fund an endowment that will offer $4,000 stipends to deserving students to experience academic enrichment opportunities, such as study abroad programs.
Donors also have the opportunity to contribute to scholarships through a $125,000 endowment, or to a $500,000 endowment that funds living-learning communities in campus residence halls.
