The now-retired CEO of D & M Leasing in Dallas, Micheal (Mike) Albert Hernandez III is a Brownsville native who spent decades leading a successful company. Having built one of the leading consumer car leasing agencies in the United States, Mike Hernandez III is spending his retirement supporting various charitable efforts, such as the Brownsville Scholars Program at his alma mater Texas A&M University.

Made possible through Mr. Hernandez’s generous donation of more than $1 million, the Brownsville Scholars Program strives to make access to a high-quality education more affordable for students from under-represented groups in the poorest part of the state. Part of Brownsville Scholar funding goes to support a “living-learning” community for specific student groups within the university’s residence halls.
Designed to provide increased academic and social support to groups of students who share common cultural or social backgrounds, the living-learning communities organize educational speakers, encourage leadership development, and provide small group academic mentoring opportunities.
