Brownsville Scholars Program Supports Students with Low Incomes

Mike Hernandez III

A leasing company executive with nearly 30 years of experience, Mike Hernandez III serves as the CEO of D & M Leasing in Dallas. Before embarking on his career in business, Mike Hernandez III grew up in Brownsville, Texas. He remains committed to supporting his hometown as the founder of the Brownsville Scholars Program.

The program provides students from families with low incomes with four-year scholarships to attend Texas A&M University. The scholarships are available exclusively to first-generation college students from Brownsville. Through the program, students can obtain scholarships of up to $4,500 that are renewable over the course of four years, stipends to pursue internships and participate in study abroad programs, coverage for Fish Camp registration fees, free travel between Brownsville Scholars Program events, and the opportunity to become a Brownsville Scholar Ambassador.
Earlier this year, the Brownsville Herald reported on the benefits of the scholarship and the impact that it has had on the lives of those who have earned it. According to one administrative employee from Texas A&M, scholarship recipients generally perform well academically. They benefit from the guidance of a mentor who is an upperclassman at A&M. In addition, recipients live within the same residence hall on campus to establish a support network and create a stronger sense of community.
